Public consulted on local biodiversity paper
Community members, landowners and those interested in the environment are invited to provide comments on a draft Local Biodiversity Strategy Public Discussion Paper developed for the City of Armadale.
The project was funded jointly by the City of Armadale and grants received from the Perth Biodiversity Project, Perth Region NRM and the Federal Government.
The draft Local Biodiversity Strategy Public Discussion Paper has a significant focus on the use of the land-use planning system to achieve biodiversity conservation over the long term as the City continues to grow.
Armadale Mayor Linton Reynolds said the Discussion Paper focused on Local Natural Areas (LNAs) under the control of the City's Town Planning Scheme.
"These natural areas are important for both the social and environmental values of the community within the City,' Cr Reynolds said.
"This Discussion Paper proposes targets and outcomes that, if adopted, will guide the City in setting its priorities for protection of natural areas. It also presents an opportunity for the community and stakeholders to understand the extent of the City's natural vegetation resources.
"It will guide the City as we develop and implement a Local Biodiversity Strategy, which will assist us in the conservation and management of sites with significant biodiversity.
"I encourage people to examine the document and provide their comments, which will be valuable in our review process and the development of the biodiversity strategy.
"In particular, landowners potentially affected by the proposal are encouraged to read and comment on the document."
The objectives of the draft discussion paper are to:
• Consolidate existing protection measures in existing City strategies, policies and plans;
• Develop an accurate mapping base and a bushland protection plan for LNAs;
• Identify objectives, goals, targets, and actions for the protection and enhancement of the LNAs in the City;
• Integrate with the current planning and management systems;
• Engage stakeholders and the community during preparation and implementation of the Strategy and action plan.
